Apple CarPlay: How to Set It Up in Your Car
What Is This in Plain English?
Imagine you had a way to magically copy the face of your home telephone — the one with all your speed-dial numbers, your favorite radio stations, and your answering machine — and paste it right onto your car's dashboard screen. That is exactly what Apple CarPlay does.
It takes the familiar buttons and apps from your iPhone and displays them on your car's built-in screen, so you can make calls, get directions, or play music without ever touching your phone. Your iPhone stays in your pocket or bag; the car's screen simply becomes a "mirror" of it.
What You Will Need Before You Start
You need three things in place before anything else will work.
- An iPhone (model 5 or newer — if you bought your phone in the last 10 years, you are almost certainly fine)
- A car made in 2015 or later that supports CarPlay (check your car's manual, or look for the CarPlay logo — it looks like a small white steering wheel on a black square)
- Either a USB cable (the same white or braided cord you use to charge your iPhone) or a car that supports Wireless CarPlay (we will explain both)
💡 Pro Tip: Not sure if your car supports CarPlay? Look at your car's center screen. If you see an icon that looks like a tiny steering wheel, you are good to go. You can also search "[Your Car Make and Year] CarPlay" on Google for a quick answer.
Part 1: Turning CarPlay On in Your iPhone
Before your car can recognize CarPlay, your iPhone needs to have it enabled. Think of this as "unlocking the front door" before your car can come inside.
- Find the Settings app on your iPhone. It looks like a small gray square with what appears to be a silver gear or cog wheel on it — similar to a tiny mechanical wheel you might find inside an old clock.
- Tap Settings, then scroll down until you see the word General. Tap on it.
- On the next screen, scroll down and look for the words CarPlay. Tap on it.
- You will see a screen that may say "My Cars" or simply be empty. This is normal — you haven't connected yet. This screen is simply ready and waiting.
🛡️ Safety Alert: Only do these steps while your car is parked and the engine is off, or while someone else is driving. Never look at your phone while you are behind the wheel.
Part 2: Connecting Your iPhone to the Car
There are two ways to connect — with a cable (more common) or wirelessly (more modern). Start with the cable method, as it works on nearly every CarPlay car.
Method A: Using a Cable (Most Common)
- Locate the USB port inside your car. It looks like a small rectangular slot, roughly the size of a stick of gum, and is usually found in the center console, the dashboard, or the armrest area. It may have a small symbol next to it that looks like a trident or a fork with three prongs — that is the universal USB symbol.
- Plug one end of your iPhone charging cable into that slot.
- Plug the other end into the bottom of your iPhone — the same place you charge it at night.
- Your car's center screen may ask: "Do you want to use CarPlay?" or show a prompt. Look for a button on that screen that says Allow or Enable and tap it.
- Within a few seconds, your car's screen should change and show a simple menu with large, colorful icons — including a green Phone icon, a purple Maps icon, and others. You are now in CarPlay.
💡 Pro Tip: If nothing happens after plugging in, try turning your car's center screen off and back on, or unplug the cable and plug it back in after 10 seconds. Sometimes it simply needs a moment to "wake up."
Method B: Wireless CarPlay (No Cable Needed)
- Make sure your car's Bluetooth is turned on. Bluetooth is your car's way of talking to nearby devices without a wire — like a short-range radio signal. Check your car's manual for how to enable it, as every car's menu is slightly different.
- On your iPhone, go to Settings, then tap Bluetooth. You will see a toggle switch — a small oval that slides left or right, like an old-fashioned light switch — make sure it is slid to the right and showing green.
- On your car's center screen, look for a Settings menu (often an icon that looks like a gear wheel) and look for the option that says Wireless CarPlay, Add New Car, or Connect New Device.
- Your iPhone should appear on your car's screen listed by your phone's name (for example, "Mary's iPhone"). Tap on it to connect.
- Your car screen will display the CarPlay home screen automatically once the connection is approved.
Using CarPlay Once You Are Connected
The CarPlay screen works like a very simple version of your iPhone. Here is what the main icons mean.
- Green icon with a white phone receiver: This is your Phone app — tap it to make or receive calls.
- White icon with a colorful compass arrow: This is Maps — tap it to get driving directions spoken aloud to you.
- Green icon with a speech bubble: This is Messages — it will read your text messages out loud and let you reply by speaking.
- Pink and white musical note icon: This is Music — for playing your songs.
💡 Pro Tip: You can also simply speak to CarPlay without touching the screen at all. Press and hold the voice control button on your steering wheel — it usually looks like a small microphone or a square with lines — and then say something like "Call my daughter" or "Take me home."
How to Stay Safe While Doing This
This section is important. Please read it fully before using CarPlay on the road.
Set everything up while parked. Do all of the connection steps above with your engine off or while you are safely parked. Never plug in cables or tap through menus while driving.
Let the car's screen do the work. Once CarPlay is running, keep your eyes on the road and use your voice to control it. The whole purpose of CarPlay is to reduce how much you look at or touch your phone.
Never hand your phone to a passenger to "set it up" while moving. It creates distraction for both of you. Pull over safely first.
Be careful of who asks you to share your screen. No legitimate company — not Apple, not your car maker, not your phone company — will ever call you and ask to see or control your iPhone screen. If anyone asks this, hang up immediately.
Your personal information stays private. CarPlay only shows information already on your phone. It does not send your contacts, photos, or messages to the car manufacturer.
What to Do If It Is Not Working
| Problem | What to Try |
|---|---|
| Screen stays blank after plugging in | Unplug, wait 10 seconds, plug back in |
| Car doesn't recognize iPhone | Restart your iPhone (hold side button, slide to power off, turn back on) |
| Wireless CarPlay won't connect | Turn Bluetooth off on your iPhone, then back on, and try again |
| CarPlay was working before but stopped | Go to Settings > General > CarPlay on iPhone, tap your car name, tap Forget This Car, then reconnect |
🛡️ Safety Alert: If you are ever unsure or frustrated, stop and ask a family member, or visit your nearest Apple Store or phone carrier store. There is no shame in asking for help — CarPlay has many small steps, and the staff are happy to walk you through it in person.
You Did It
Once CarPlay is set up, it will connect automatically every time you get in your car and plug in your phone (or simply sit down, if you are using wireless). You only need to go through these steps once.
